Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother named him Jabez saying, "Because I bore him with pain." Now Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, "Oh that You would bless me indeed and enlarge my border, and that Your hand might be with me, and that You would keep me from harm that it may not pain me!" And God granted him what he requested.
NAME
They say name is synonymous to character
- Jabez means Pain because his mother gave birth to him in sorrow
- His character was adversely affected by his pain
CHARACTER
The text says Jabez was an honorable man. Being honorable does not happen overnight. Being honorable means you have personal integrity and you are guided with a reputation for having strong moral and ethical principle. Jabez was morally upright and God noticed that.
Being Honourable also has a lot to do with your ability to withstand and endure adversity
PAIN
- James 1:1-4 trying of your faith works patience -count it as joy because it is working patience
-let patience work till it matures -and after maturity - you will find you want nothing
- 2 Corinthians 4:7-9 the treasure is the trials that we go through and we go through this trial so that the power of God may be shown to us; maturity of the power is from God’s keeping power while we are going through these trials à the treasure is inside of us (clay)
FAITH
Through his pain, Jabez cried out to the God of Israel saying "Oh that You would bless me indeed and enlarge my border, and that Your hand might be with me, and that You would keep me from harm that it may not pain me!"
And God granted him what he requested.
It was a simple prayer and yet God answered.
